Planned program — not yet open

Autonomous Freight Operations Specialist

Prepare for the operations jobs growing up around automated freight — planning and monitoring autonomous missions, managing exceptions, coordinating terminals, and keeping the records that make it all defensible. Not a driving course, and honest about what is deployed versus projected.

Who it's for: CDL drivers seeking a non-driving transition, dispatchers and freight coordinators, terminal and yard staff, and career-changers entering transportation operations

Program outcomes

What you will be able to do

  • Describe what autonomous freight actually is today — what operates commercially, what remains pilot or projection — and keep that picture current from primary sources
  • Use accurate automation vocabulary (ADS vs. ADAS, automation levels, ODD, fallback, minimal risk condition, remote assistance) and correct common misuse
  • Sequence an autonomous freight mission from planning and readiness verification through launch, monitoring, landing and handoff
  • Classify operational exceptions, run a structured triage, and escalate on the correct path with a defensible record
  • Coordinate terminal, hub and yard operations where autonomous and conventional freight meet
  • Support incident response and post-incident documentation from an operations seat
  • Read regulatory status honestly — current law, guidance, exemptions and proposals differ by layer and by state
  • Map your own background onto the emerging role families without inflating what the field currently offers

Automated freight is being deployed as an operations system that needs trained humans — mission operations, fleet monitoring, exception management, terminal coordination, readiness and records. This program prepares people for those seats. It never teaches anyone to operate, override, or remotely drive an automated vehicle.

Curriculum

9 modules and 34 lessons, from deployment reality to career readiness

Built on Freight Flow University's shared transportation-operations foundation, because autonomous freight networks employ conventional operations at their edges.

  1. Module 1 · 4 lessons

    The Automated Freight Landscape

Establish what autonomous freight actually is today, the deployment models, the ecosystem parties and the human-role map.

  2. Module 2 · 4 lessons

ADS Concepts & the Human Role Boundary

Build accurate, non-engineering literacy in how an ADS works, what an ODD is, what fallback and minimal risk condition mean, and where humans sit.

  3. Module 3 · 4 lessons

    Mission & Dispatch Operations

Teach the autonomous mission lifecycle, dispatch differences, readiness verification and fleet monitoring.

  4. Module 4 · 4 lessons

    Exception Management & Remote Support

Teach exception taxonomy, triage, the remote-assistance workflow, dynamic ODD exits and exception communication.

  5. Module 5 · 4 lessons

    Terminal, Hub & Yard Operations

Teach the autonomous terminal: flows, arrival/departure coordination, yard staging, gate operations and terminal documentation.

  6. Module 6 · 4 lessons

    Safety, Incident & Minimal-Risk Operations

Teach safety-case thinking, the specialist's incident-response seat, post-incident documentation awareness and human-factors discipline.

  7. Module 7 · 3 lessons

    Maintenance Readiness & Inspection Coordination

Teach vehicle-health and sensor-readiness literacy, inspection frameworks at awareness depth, and driverless maintenance coordination.

  8. Module 8 · 3 lessons

    Regulatory & Compliance Awareness

Teach the two-agency structure, state variation, status literacy (current vs proposed), and compliance-relevant records and escalation.

  9. Module 9 · 4 lessons

    Customer, Data & Career Readiness

Teach customer operations on autonomous lanes, data discipline, career pathways and the capstone portfolio.

Every lesson carries a knowledge check, and the program closes with a final assessment. Scenario-based labs and downloadable working tools — exception logs, mission-monitoring templates, readiness worksheets — run on paper or a browser, with no vehicle or simulator required.

Our approach

Deployment-reality honesty is the product

Autonomous trucking attracts hype in both directions. This program is built to survive scrutiny instead.

  • Dated, sourced claims about what is deployed — and volatility taught as a fact of the field
  • Regulatory-status literacy as a trained skill: law, guidance, exemptions and proposals are different things
  • A maintained regulatory register behind the curriculum, reviewed before claims reach a learner
  • Evidence-graded career mapping — no employment promises, no invented job markets

Before you ask

Frequently asked questions

Will this teach me to drive, override, or remotely operate an autonomous truck?
No. Vehicle operation, safety-driver work and remote driving are employer-certified, employer-specific competencies. This program prepares the surrounding operations workforce — mission planning, monitoring, exceptions, terminals and records — and says so plainly.
Is driverless trucking even legal?
It depends on the layer and the state: current law, federal guidance, exemptions and pending proposals all differ, and the picture changes. The program treats reading that status honestly as a core trained skill rather than asserting a blanket answer that would go stale.
Are there actually jobs in this yet?
Deployment is real but geographically concentrated, and the field is early — the program says so directly and grades the evidence behind every role family it maps. Every module also teaches operations discipline that transfers to conventional dispatch, terminal and fleet work.
Will I get a certificate?
Certificate eligibility for this program has not been authorized yet — that is a separate decision from the curriculum being complete. We will not claim a certificate is included until it actually is.
When does enrollment open?
No launch date is set. The curriculum is authored and in review; regulatory-sensitive material gets qualified human review before we sell a seat. Join the interest list and we will contact you when that changes.

Not open for enrollment

Autonomous Freight Operations Specialistis not open for enrollment right now, and no launch date is set. Tell us you're interested and we'll reach out when that changes.

Education only — no income, employment, licensing-approval, or business-outcome guarantees. Deployment of autonomous trucking remains limited and varies by state; this program makes no claim that driverless operation is broadly authorized.
